Subjective and objective methods were compared for the assessment of the quality of unretted and retted straw, and the fibres obtained after dew-retting of four flax cultivars, Ariane, Evelin, Laura and Viola. Maturity of straw, degree of retting, ease of decortication after retting, divisibility, handle, cleanliness and colour were assessed as subjective factors and of these, degree of retting and handle appear to be useful for assessing quality. The samples were also analysed for physical and chemical differences using a range of objective methods. Straw quality could not be graded using height and maturity, although stem diameter and technical length could indicate quality. Changes in N, lipid and ash content, as a result of retting, were observed. The increase in the proportions of fibre fractions present in retted compared with unretted straw, due to microbial degradation of pectin, could be identified by thermal analysis. Analyses of the fibre samples to determine fineness, strength, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and minerals were carried out and significant differences in some of the parameters were identified. Cultivar Laura produced the best fibre. Fibre fineness, ash, lipid, caustic weight loss and fibre fractions as determined by thermal analysis were found to be important objective parameters for quality assessment. The assessment of fibre samples performed subjectively by an expert grader and by selected objective methods gave similar quality rankings.  相似文献

In tropical forests, deciduousness is an outcome of integrated effect of drought, tree characteristics and soil moisture conditions and thus it is a reliable indicator of seasonal drought experienced by different tree species. Variations in the deciduousness are associated with several ecophysiological characteristics, such as varying allocation pattern of metabolic products, resource capture and conservation, water relations and stem water storages, annual carbon sequestration, timing of reproductive event initiation, extent of separation of vegetative and reproductive events and leaf strategies, and it helps in maintenance of water balance and protection of tree organs during the seasonal drought. Tropical forests support mosaics of tree functional types showing marked differences in the duration of deciduousness (from leaf exchanging to >8 months deciduous), as a result of varying degree of water stress experienced by physiognomy, distribution and wood anatomy of tropical trees. Wide variations in deciduousness in the same species growing at different sites suggest the high sensitivity of tropical trees to small changes in growing habitat. In the present review we have explored the ecological significance of deciduousness in tropical trees with emphasis on: (a) inter- and intraspecies plasticity in deciduousness, (b) various capacity adaptations related with the duration of deciduousness, (c) relationship between tree stem water status and deciduousness, and (d) probable effect of impending climate change on tropical trees. An attempt has also been made to establish deciduousness as climate change indicator in the dry tropics. There is need to develop capabilities to detect and predict the impact of climate change on deciduousness through long-term phenological network in tropics. Remote sensing techniques can generate valuable ecological information such as leaf level drought response and phenological patterns. Deciduousness has the potential to emerge as an important focus for ecological research to address critical questions in global modeling, monitoring, and climate change.  相似文献

To characterize circadian rest-activity rhythm in COPD, 26 cases (66.9 ± 8.5y) and 15 controls (63.0 ± 10.7y) were assessed by actimetry. Rhythm fragmentation was measured by intradaily variability (IV), while synchronization to the 24-h light-dark cycle was measured by interdaily stability (IS). The average activity during the least active 5-h period (L5) and the average activity during the most active 10-h period (M10) were used to calculate the relative amplitude mean [RAm = (M10-L5)/(M10+L5)]. COPD patients presented higher IVm (0.242 ± 0.097 vs 0.182 ± 0.063) and L5 (36.849 ± 18.239 vs 19.888 ± 12.268) and lower RAm (0.696 ± 0.134 vs 0.833 ± 0.093) than controls. Future studies on the effects of chronotherapy measures in COPD are warranted.  相似文献

Characters in animals used in signalling and subjected to strong directional selection often demonstrate (i) an elevated level of fluctuating asymmetry (small random deviations from bilateral symmetry) and (ii) a negative relationship between the degree of individual fluctuating asymmetry and the size of a given character. We tested these two predictions in plants since flowers are subjected to strong directional selection and are involved in signalling to pollinators, whereas leaves are supposed not to be directly involved in signalling. The overall level of fluctuating asymmetry in a number of plant species with bilaterally or radially symmetric flowers was not generally higher in floral traits than in leaves. The level of fluctuating asymmetry in plants was sometimes significantly consistent within individuals. The absolute degree of individual fluctuating asymmetry in floral traits was generally negatively related to the size of the trait, while there was a positive relationship for leaves. The degree of individual fluctuating asymmetry in floral traits was marginally negatively related to the degree of individual fluctuating asymmetry in leaf traits. These patterns of fluctuating asymmetry in plants suggest that (i) the degree of asymmetry in flowers signals different aspects of quality than does the degree of asymmetry in leaves, and that (ii) fluctuating asymmetry in flowers often reflects the phenotypic quality of individual plants.  相似文献

Aims We test the hypothesis that invasive plant species at their range edges experience lower herbivory and allocate less to defense at the edge of an expanding range edge than from more central parts of their distribution, during secondary invasion in a new range. Invasive plants are often able to spread rapidly through new areas. The success of invasive species in new ranges is frequently attributed to enemy release in these new areas and associated evolutionary changes minimizing allocation to defense in favor of growth and reproduction. Enemy release could also explain rapid advances of invasive species upon arriving in new habitats. If invasive species accumulate enemies over time in a new location, then these species may experience a release from their enemies at expanding range fronts. Enemy release at these range fronts may accelerate range expansion.Methods We used populations of four woody invasive species within the invaded range, and four native control species. We quantified leaf herbivory and leaf physical defense traits at both range central and range edge locations, over two 1-month sampling periods, sampled 7 months apart.Important findings Herbivory at the range edge did not differ to the range center but patterns were not consistent across species. There was a trend for lower herbivory at the range edge for Lantana camara, which was reflected in lower leaf toughness. Overall, leaf toughness was greater at the range edge location across invasive and control species. Physical defenses were different among range locations in a few species, though most species show the same trend, suggesting higher herbivory pressures at the range edge location or differences may be due to climatic factors. Leaves of L. camara were significantly less tough at range edges, suggesting that some species can potentially escape their enemies at range edges. However, our results overall do not support the hypothesis that plants at the edge of their ranges experience reduced impact from their enemies.  相似文献

对3个樟芝野生菌株和5个物理诱变菌株进行液体发酵,通过测定发酵液黏度变化情况,观测培养性状、菌球及粗提物产量和多糖、蛋白质及三萜含量,从中筛选出适宜液体发酵的多糖、三萜及蛋白质高产优良菌株。试验结果显示:供试的8个樟芝菌株生长曲线基本一致,其中,菌株327和Gg生长速度较快,培养的第9–10天开始出现菌丝自溶现象;经过筛选,327菌株为多糖和蛋白质高产菌株,多糖和蛋白质的产量分别比出发菌株提高238.20%和10.33%;Gg为三萜高产菌株,三萜产量比出发菌株提高57.86%。野生樟芝菌株经物理诱变效果明显。  相似文献

The effect of extremely weak alternating magnetic fields of various types with the amplitudes δ of 2 μT on the heart rate variability in humans was studied. Volunteers were placed in a large-volume coil system (2ω2ω2 m), which provided exposure of the whole body to extremely weak alternating magnetic fields uniform in their amplitude. It was shown for the first time that the exposure to such fields could both increase and decrease the magnitude of stress in humans. In particular, the field tuned to the nuclear spins of hydrogen atoms (amplitude, 1.6 μT and frequency, 76 Hz) decreased the Baevsky stress index, whereas the field tuned to the magnetic moments formed by the orbiting electrons in some atoms (amplitude, 0.192 μT and frequency, 3000 Hz) increased this index. These results provide a possible explanation for the mechanisms of adverse effects caused by extremely weak alternating magnetic fields of certain types of both technogenic and natural origins on the human cardiovascular system.  相似文献
